When will it stop? Eight (8) dead in NY by a "terrorist" deliberately running down bicyclists, a dozen or more injured.
I often turn to Matthew 5:1-12 Verse 7 a blessing for those who help others.
Praying for those injured and mourning with those who are mourning.
(and knowing how hollow my words are) Yet sincere
PSALM 23:4 (NIV)
4. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
As I listened to a news update reporting that a driver of a pick-up ran down at least a dozen bicyclist with about half of those being fatalities. I got a sinking feeling in my chest, I sometime call it a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach.
Biblical scripture is not always comforting words for grieving and hurting but I always offer a prayer after I have been with someone hurting. In over forty years in ministry I have heard more “thank you's” for just being there! Not that no one ever said thanks for your prayers, it is just that the number of times people have commented on the preacher/chaplain “being there”! In that time of need, Out numbers the time I've heard thanks for the prayer.
All the same we should pray one need only read of Jesus of Nazareth's discourse in the garden with the disciples when he found them sleeping. The Prophet Samuel knew God's requirement for prayer when he said;
As senseless as it my seem or as fruitless as it may appear the God of our universe wants to hear the prayers of his creation all the same.
With that I am praying for the victims of yet another tragedy. As helpless as I feel, as hallow as my words my sound like Samuel far be it from me, that I fail to pray for those in need.
Holy Father, Creator of Heaven and Earth and all that exists, All the people touched, hurt and mourn the deceased need the comfort that only a merciful and loving God and Redeemer can impart. Send the Peace that surpasses our finite understanding. Amen
